Our New Bridge
Well, this was the summer the road closed! Yep, the whole stretch has been off-limits while they work away - and honestly, aside from the construction noise, it's been kind of nice and quiet. After years of back-and-forth, the town finally decided it was time to replace that old "bridge". I mean, calling it a bridge was always a bit generous - it was really just a couple of drainpipes with some cement and pavement on top. But just look at what they're building now! It's a real beauty in the making. The whole thing is supposed to cost around seven million dollars (gasp!), though most of that's coming from state and federal coffers. Fingers crossed this one lasts a good hundred years - by then, who knows? We might all be zipping around in flying cars, and old-fashioned bridges will be charming little throwbacks.
Home And Away
We've mostly been sticking close to home since I got back from Europe - a little traveling goes a long way! But we did manage a few nice trips out, including a lovely afternoon celebrating Sandy's 80th birthday, doesn't he look young? And really, who needs to go far when the garden's doing so well? The flowers have been blooming their hearts out, and the critters seem pretty happy too. Even with that early heatwave in June - three days over 90F (32C) - things have held up surprisingly well.
Spring in the City!
Dan made it into the city a couple of times this spring - always a treat when the sun's out and the sidewalks aren't too sizzling. He wandered through the Met, took in the sights from the High Line, meandered around the West Village, and ended up at the historic Fraunces Tavern. Fun fact: it's not only Manhattan's oldest building, but at one point, it was the whole U.S. government's headquarters! Wild, right? He also got to ride the shiny new Second Avenue subway and came home on a beautifully painted Conrail train - celebrating 40 years of commuter rail into the city. Not a bad way to wrap up the day.
